The Power of Purple

Those who know me well know exactly what I was wearing on Tuesday. Just as I wear my red jacket on Sundays after Razorback football wins, every Election Day I wear something purple. It’s a small thing, but to me it’s a visible self-reminder that Jesus is my King and my allegiance is not to red or blue but to purple, the color of royalty, the color of the King. In Jesus’ day the royal robes were always purple, and it was a purple robe that was placed on Jesus after his trial:

“The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor's headquarters and called out the entire regiment. They dressed him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head. Then they saluted him and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!” (Mark 15:16-18)

An act designed to mock Jesus actually revealed who He was, only in a way far beyond anything they could ever imagine. Jesus had come to usher in the Kingdom of Heaven, and He is our King. I talked about Jesus’ Kingship in my sermon a couple of weeks ago, quoting C.S. Lewis who said, “If you don’t acknowledge Jesus as King, you will serve somebody else. Jesus is your King; serve him.”

How do we do that well? How do we become transformed people (Rom. 12:2) who think differently than the world thinks and who make a Kingdom difference? Well, we start by living out our Kingdom values in our conversations, our relationships, and our decisions. We lead with love (Romans 12:10) and act in love (Romans 14:15) that we might be used by God to usher in His Kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven.

So, whether your preferred candidate won or lost on Tuesday, always remember that, regardless of who sits in the White House or in Congress, Jesus still sits on the throne. He is our King, we are His servants, and our call is to live Kingdom lives as we love as He loved and live as He lived.
