Whether or not you are a golf fan, you need to know the name, Scottie Scheffler. If you don’t know who he is, I encourage you to look him up. For one thing, he is currently, without a doubt, the best player in the world, winning at a rate and doing things in golf we haven’t seen since Tiger Woods.
He won again this past weekend at the BMW Classic. And this coming weekend, he is the overwhelming favorite to win The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass and take home the prestigious FedEx Cup Championship, which crowns the Player of the Year.
Don’t like golf and don’t care? Well, there’s another reason you might want to look him up. He’s an outspoken Christian who is brutally honest about himself and his faith.
For example, after winning this past Sunday, Scottie was asked how it felt to win again. His response was surprising, to say the least.
"This is not a fulfilling life. It's fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it's not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart." He said, “You win, you celebrate, I get to hug my family, my sister's there, it's such an amazing moment. Then it's like, OK, what are we going to eat for dinner? Life goes on."
Wow!
Recently, I grabbed coffee with a young man who is just starting his career and learning to live for Jesus. I asked him about his faith and he said, “Somewhere in college, I woke up one day and just thought, “There has to be more.” That thought set him on a journey, one that has led him to find his deepest desires met in Christ.
Many of us have experienced what Scottie and this young man have discovered. There are longings in the human heart, at a soul level, which can never be fully satisfied by any accomplishment, job, career, amount of material wealth or relationships. These are soul-level longings that only our Creator can touch.
St. Augustine, a 4th century theologian and philosopher, put it like this – “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you".
Over and over, Scripture points us to be the One who deeply satisfies. For example, this from the psalmist -
"O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.” (Psalm 63:1)
One day, Jesus had a conversation with a Samaritan woman at a well. He said, “If you knew the generosity of God and who I am, you would be asking me for a drink, and I would give you fresh, living water… Anyone who drinks the water I give will never thirst—not ever. The water I give will be an artesian spring within, gushing fountains of endless life.” (John 4:10, 14, MSG)
Maybe you find yourself thirsty at a soul level, dissatisfied, exhausted and empty, left parched and dry by hurry, crowds and busyness, and from pursuits that have failed to deeply quench your thirst.
Know that we have a Savior who is offering us living water that will satisfy the longing of our souls. May we drink deeply from Him!
