We Are Advent People
December 11, 2025
When people ask what I do, I usually respond with, “I’m in Kids Ministry, which is perfect for me because I’m on their level.” Just like most kids, I like to play and joke around. Being in Kids Ministry, I’ve noticed the children’s eagerness to learn and their ability to be amazed when they understand a new part of Scripture and how they can apply it to everyday scenarios.
At Christ Kids this year, we’ve started inviting our pastors to come give the lesson once a month. I wish you could all be in the room to see their faces and hear their responses to the pastors’ stories and questions. They are filled with wonderment and anticipation and their reactions and attitudes are so sweet. They are hungry to learn and to have that relationship with Christ. They’re so excited that they encourage the friend beside them to join them in dancing during worship as they sing without abandon at the top of their lungs.
That inspires me to be more childlike in my walk with Jesus. During too many seasons of my life, I let the mundane and ritual rule my walk with the Lord. I find myself saying the same prayers, reading the same Scripture and listening to the same sermons. I forget that I can be filled with wonderment and awe that comes so easily to a child. In Mark 9:15, it says, “As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.” I want to be overwhelmed with wonder. I want to run to Jesus. But…life. Man, it’s so easy to use that excuse, right? “I’ll sit down and read a chapter out of John, but first let me do the dishes.” “I need to do my reading from Steve’s study, but first I want to watch this show.” (Sorry Steve!) I need to pray, but I’ll do that when I get into bed…and fall asleep part way through. The list goes on and on, doesn’t it?
What will it take for me to be filled with this wonderment? I think this Christmas season is a perfect time to refocus. I love the Christmas story. From the anticipation of the shepherds to the marvel of the Wise Men. All creation was ready for the true King, the One who would come save us all, the One who promises Eternal Life if we just believe in Him. It’s so beautiful and overwhelming all at the same time. Little Amber McAllister, one who is so broken, gets to have eternal life and live with the wonderful Almighty one day in His Kingdom.
“Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Mark 10:15. It’s time for me to learn from the kids at Christ Church, to be filled with awe and wonder. To seek Him with all my heart, with all my soul, with all my strength and with all my mind.
